[12781] Mary Ann Phelps Rich, Crossing the Plains and Settling in Utah (Compiled and written by David Kenison, Orem, Utah, dkenison@xmission.com) Mary Ann Phelps was born in 1829 in Illinois. Her parents joined the Church in 1831 and moved to Missouri. Mary Ann remembered an occasion when Zions Camp arrived in Missouri and Joseph Smith preached in her home; the Prophet took her on his knee and blessed her. Mary Ann was 15 when she heard Joseph preach his last address to the Nauvoo Legion. She wrote: "When the Prophet Joseph found he had to go to Carthage he wanted a man by the name of Rosecrantz, who was well acquainted with the governor, to go with him. He sent a messenger asking me if I would go and stay with Mrs. Rosecrantz, while her husband accompanied the Prophet to Carthage. On their way they called at the gate, with their company, and the Prophet Joseph asked me if I would bring them out a drink of water. This I cheerfully did and the Prophet said to me, 'The Lord bless you, you shall have a disciple's reward.' This was the last time I ever saw him alive." She was in Nauvoo when the bodies of Joseph and Hyrum were returned. In January 1845, Mary Ann was sealed to Charles C. Rich as his third wife. She received her endowment in the Nauvoo Temple. A year later, on February 12, 1846, she left Nauvoo to begin the journey across the plains. Charles Rich was assigned to take charge of the settlement at Mount Pisgah, Iowa, so the family spent the winter of 1846-47 there. There was much sickness and suffering; about seventy people died in Mount Pisgah that winter. In March 1847, they moved on to Winter Quarters, and then in June began the final journey to Salt Lake. In order to avoid hiring a man to help the family on the journey, Mary Ann and one of her "sister wives" (Emmeline) volunteered to drive one of the ox teams. The work was hard, but the two women were noted for their attitude: "...instead of murmuring they frequently made the air resound with their songs of joy, for they were going to the Rocky Mountains where they would be free to live their religion and be acknowledged as wives. Sister Rich relates that she had never enjoyed good health until she started on that journey; she felt so well during this hard trip that it seemed a pleasure for her to do anything in her power to help her husband and the rest of the company." They arrived in the valley on October 1. Mary Ann recorded that when they finally finished the journey, her skirts reached only to her knees - "for in driving her ox team over difficult parts of the road her clothing had caught in the brush many times, and parts of it had been torn away." The first winter was a hard one for the new settlers: "During that winter (1847-1848) we had a hard time, as provisions were scarce, and there was a big family of us, my husband having six wives and six children, but we were all willing to help him.... We had to live on rations, or we would not have had bread stuff to last us till harvest; but the winter was mild and in the spring we dug segoes and cooked greens, which helped us in our privations." Charles Rich became an apostle in 1849, and then was called to help settle southern California. Mary Ann accompanied him to San Bernardino in 1851, where she stayed for the next six years. They then returned to Utah, living in Centerville and Provo before moving again to colonize in Paris, Idaho. Mary Ann bore 10 children, six of whom lived past childhood. When Charles died in 1883, Mary Ann decided to stay in Idaho. She died in 1912 at the age of 82. (See Andrew Jenson, _LDS Biographical Encyclopedia_, 3:497-99)
