[14398] Married by G. Heathcote Hills, rector

[4429] William H. was born in 1857, at Knoxville, Knox, Illinois. A "Standard Daily Journal" of 1905, apparently kept by his father, gives William's address as "1312 W. 26th St., St. Jo, Mo." In 1913, at the time of his father's death, he was living in St. Joseph, MO. In 1917 he was employed as the commercial agent for the New York Central Railroad in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

William and Ida were married by G. Heathcote, Rector. William is buried at Mount Mora Cemetery, Saint Joseph, Missouri. His tombstone reads, "Wm H. Bartle 1859-1929 & Wife Ida H. 1865-1925".

[9833] "The History of Mower County Minnesota," editor in chief Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge. Chicago. HC Cooper Jr & Co., 1911, 145-146.

Quoting another early settler Alfred Cressey, page 145-46.

"In regard to the early days of Mower County, my wife and I drove from Burlington, Racine county, Wisconsin, with a team of horses, to find a home in the territory of Minnesota. We arrived at David Chandler's farm October 13, 1856. In the spring of that year, I was married to Hannah Phelps, who moved to Mower County, from Burlington, Wisconsin, with the following families: Thomas Bormella, George and William Phelps, Diadamy and Mary Phelps, and John Watkins and family, composed of eight sons and daughters. John Phelps had proceded them and was on the ground with E. Merry and family, David and John Chandler, John Osborne and family, Caleb Stock and a Mr. Smith. The last two named with John Phelps composed the mill company."

[9840] Obituary:

Mary Melissa Cressey, the daughter of Rev. Alfred and Hannah Cressey was born in the parsonage at Princeton, Minn., Jan 10th, 1866, when her father was pastor of the M. E. Church at the place. She continued with her parents until we were appointed to Wesley Chapel, Minn., When she was married by her father in the church at the place to Henry Gardiner of that city, June 25th, 1890, and remained there until the death of her husband, Oct. 19th, 1893. Their first and only child Grace Lucile, was born there July 6, 1891. After the funeral and affairs settled Mary M. Gardiner and daughter Grace went home with her parents to Albert Lea, Minn., where her father was pastor of the Methodist Epicopal Church. The family moved to Austin Oct. 1, 1894, where they have resided ever since, at Kenwood Avenue, 311 north.

Mrs. Gardiner joined the M. E. Church when very young. She has always taken part in sunday school and public exercises in the churches every since she was a child and organist for her father's choir. After her husband died she became deaf so she could not hear the services, so she has not attended regulary the public services, but has contributed of her small income a portion for herself and daughter Grace's attendance and place in the program of the children's exercises to the last of her earthly life, always attending to teaching Grace to pray and taking pains to have her taught religiously, and Grace has become a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Austin where she and her mother have the good will of all.

Her sickness commenced with a cold about the beginning of the month of Feb. 1905. It developed into a bad case of grippe Sunday Feb 5th. Dr. Hegge was called to administer. She grew worse for two or three days, then was little better.

She had an attack of pleurisy, but it yielded to treatment and on Thursday seemed somewhat better, but again Friday morning was very, very weak, but rallied and at noon, evening and midnight was still better. Saturday 2 p.m., while the nurse was trying her temperature an attack of heart failure began which ended her earthly life before the doctor reached her bedside. Mrs. Gardner leaves beside her daughter, her father, Rev. Alfred Cressey, two brothers, John A. and Charles W. G. Cressey, and one sister, Mrs. Dana Child of Spokane, Washington, to mourn her loss, but not without hope.

Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee,
Though sorrows and darkness encompass the tomb;
The saviour has passed through its portals before thee,
And the lamp of his love is thy guide thro' the gloom.
Thou art gone to the grave, but 'twere wrong to deplore thee,
When god was thy ransom, thy guardian adn guide.
He gave thee, and took thee, and soon shall restore thee,
Where death hath no sting, since the saviour hath died.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Austin, Tuesday, Feb 14, 1905, bring one of the worst drifts of the season, but the church was well seated to pay their respects to the dead, and living friends. The choir sang the beautiful hymns tenderly, and Rev. G. W. Lutz spoke beautiful words in regard to the life and qualifications of the departed. Kind friends from far and near contributed an abundance of beautiful flowers and the body was laid in the Oakwood Cemetery to await the general resurrection of the dead, when soul and body shall awaken in Christ's likeness.

[11443] Church records show Henry Wm. as his name. Family members say he himselfwrote his name as Henry Laurence. After Henry and Catherine married, theymoved to Red Wing, Minnesota where Henry practiced medicine. Later theymoved to Ellsworth where he continued medical work. Dr. Scheid died whentheir children were only 4 yrs and 2 yrs. old.

[11444] Obituary in Pierce County Herald Newspaper of Feb. 3, 1949: An Ellsworthlady, who through her own personal effort and ability to cope withproblems had won the way into the hearts of friends and neighbors, diedMonday evening, January 31, 1949. That lady was Mrs. Catherine Scheide, one of our oldest residents. She died "with her boots on" and I believethat is how she would have liked to have gone to meet her creator. Mrs.Scheide passed away at about 6 o'clock. She had apparently been herusual good health during the day. Her sudden death came as a shock toneighbors who knew her intimately.

The funeral will be this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the PresbyterianChurch with Rev. Melvin Steinborn officiating. Internment will be at theMaple Grove Cemetery. The body will be in state at the church from 2 to3 o'clock. Catherine Larsen was born October 24, 1869 at Reeds Landing,Minnesota. She grew up there and later came to Esdaile. She was marriedto Dr. W. L. Scheide of that village on April 29, 1887. They later movedto Red Wing where he practiced medicine for several years, and the toEllsworth where he continued his medical work. Dr. Scheide died in 1896,leaving his wife to bring up their two small children, Mabel and Vernon. The former died April 2, 1945.

Mrs. Scheide was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and thePresbyterian Church. We will always remember our old neighbor with atruly great sense of humor. She knew "what was what". She was a greatworker and not one to be "waited on".
