Entered the U.S. Military Academy in 1866. He graduated from West Point35th in a class of 57 durning the summer of 1870. McClernand was one ofonly nine from his class to make the grade of Brigadier General.
Received the Congressional Medal of Honor "for most distinguishedgallantry of action against the Nez Perce Indians." In Cuba, serving asadjutant-general to General William R. Shafter, McClernand wasrecommended for another brevet, "for gallantry in action against theSpanish forces at Santiago, Cuba, July 1, 1898." He later received theSilver Star citation.
McClernand served as Colonel of the 4th U.S. Infantry in the PhilippineInsurrection and was in military adviser to the Japanese Army durning itswar with Russia.
He commanded the 1st U.S. Cavalry at Fort Clark, Texas. McClernand alsoserved at the Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois.
Lived in Easton, North Hampton County, Pennsyvania.

[13027] Upon the death of his father-in-law, became the head and manager of Phelps, Dodge & Co. William Earl Dodge was a merchant and reformer who helped organize the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Dodge was a Republican representative in Congress from New York City and the president of the National Temperance Society from 1865 until his death. William Earl Dodge was nicknamed the "Christian merchant" for having contributed "to every free evangelical church to every religious and benevolent movement started in New York City between the years 1830 to 1880."
A statue of William Earl Dodge by John Quincy Adams Ward was erected in 1885 in Herald Square, in the triangle formed by Broadway, 6th Avenue and West 35th Street. In 1941 the statue was moved to Bryant Park. along the park path on the north side of the park near West 42nd Street.

[13384] In 1817 they emigrated to Deleware, Ohio, where Mr. Hayes bought land and became a prosperous merchant and frmer and died five years later of typhoid fever leaving a wife and two children. He was descended from George Hayes, who settled in Windsor, CT., about 1682, and later in Simsbury, and was born Scotland 1655.
