Robert Boggs Zimmerman was born on October 5th, 1811 in Centre County, Pennsylvania. As a young man he moved from Pennsylvania to Elmira, New York and learned the trade of painter and chair maker. In the summer of1835 Robert started west with his eyes set on the prairies of Illinois. He traveled by stage, but while in Terre Haute, Indiana he missed his connection. Instead of waiting in Terre Haute for the next stage, Robert and two others started on foot. Upon arriving at the Okaw River in Illinois, they found a company of emigrants from Tennessee. The company of approximately 200-300 hundred people numbered 100 hundred wagons, the men of the company were constructing a bridge for the teams to cross. Robert and his friends helped build the bridge and remained with the wagon train. On November 18th, 1835 the emigrants reached its destination in Springfield, Illinois.

From the moment Robert settled in Springfield, he proved to have a nose for business. He first entered into business with Mr. Powell & Mr. Phelps and then with a man by the name of John A. Mason. Finally in1841, Robert established a partnership with Alexander P. Williard that lasted 24 years until Williard's death in 1865. After the death of Williard, Zimmerman was in business primarily by himself. He owned a paint/hardware store and was one of the most sought after house builders in Sangamon County. According to the United States Census of 1870, Zimmerman's personal wealth exceeded $28,000, which was a considerable estate for that time period.

Zimmerman came to Springfield as a chair maker, but his skill as a carpenter and woodsman made him a true craftsman. Robert's pieces were sought out by people from all over central Illinois. One of his first customers was William Butler*. Like Zimmerman, Butler was one of Springfield's first settlers and was likewise very successful. Zimmerman custom built most of the Butler family furniture. Little did the two men know that their grandchildren would make them in-laws. It is because of that fact that many of the Zimmerman/Butler pieces are still in the family today, the most famous of which is the grandfather clock which is displayed in home of Susan Butler-Crawford **.

Robert married Susan Philenia Seeley in her hometown of Farmington on Christmas Day, 1838. They had one child, Susan Louise who was born on April 17, 1840. After two years of marriage, Susan Philenia died on October 30, 1840. She was only 22 years old. At just 6 months of age, Susan Louise was without a mother. Robert must have felt almost helpless having to raise a young child by himself, but somehow he managed. Finally in the fall of 1845 Robert met and married Mary C. Townsend. Mary and Susan Louise readily accepted one another. Robert & Mary became very active in the community of Springfield. They were lifelong members and generous contributors of the Second Presbyterian Church. During the War of Rebellion, Mary was a proud member of the "Ladies Aid Society, "which worked tirelessly for the Union War effort. Robert & Mary had two children, which died in infancy, but were blessed with the adoption of little girl named Lizzie.

In the late 1849 a group of Portuguese refugees fleeing across the United States on their way to California, stopped in Springfield to camp for the winter. During their stay, sickness broke out among the refugees. Several people in the party died including the parents of a three-month baby girl. With no hesitation, the Zimmermans took the baby into their heart and adopted her as their own. The little girl was named Lizzie.

Both of Robert's girls grew up to marry prominent men. In 1860, Susan Louise married Eugene Gross, also of Springfield. Eugene was an attorney and owned a law practice with his brother William Gross. The practice was very successful and the brothers wrote a series of law-books which only enhanced the reputation of their practice***. Lizzie married Martin Smith in 1875. Not much is known about Martin other than he was an Officer in the United States Army and that he supposedly came from a wealthy family.

In 1874, tragedy struck the Zimmerman & Gross family, when Eugene died leaving Susan Louise with four children and no means to support them. Immediately after Eugene's death, Robert, with the help of Mary, stepped into the household and became its mainstay. Robert helped with the things around the house that a husband would ordinarily do and provided a positive male influence that the children needed. He also provided the family with some financial help, until Susan Louise could get on her feet. Most importantly Robert helped Susan Louise make a new life for herself. Not only did Robert teach his daughter how to keep track of household finances, but he also taught her how to run a business. In time, Susan Louise became an astute businesswoman who was to be become very successful at investing in real estate. Susan Louise learned from her father what must have been extremely difficult, how survive in man's world.

The twilight of Robert Zimmerman's life was spent quietly with his family. When not helping his daughter with her business affairs or spending time with his grandchildren, Robert enjoyed reading and keeping up with local affairs. Although he never ran for a public office, he was an avid member of the Whig Party, and then Republican Party. Robert also found time to be an officer in the Second Presbyterian Church of which he and Mary contributed generously.

On May 12, 1894, Robert Boggs Zimmerman died of old age; he was 82 years old. Robert had lived a remarkable life, he watched the small village of Springfield, which he helped to found, turn into a flourishing city. Most importantly, he created a highly successful business and raised a beautiful family. The greatest tribute ever written about Robert Zimmerman was probably done by Betty Butler-McHenry: "Of all the ancestors I've heard about, Robert B. Zimmerman, my Grandmother Gross's father is the one I would like to have known the most. Not only because of what he did, but also because of the kind of man he was. My mother spoke of him often, calling him "Grampuzimun," running his name together as though it was one word, as she must have done when she was a little girl. Always she spoke of him with the most frank adoration, which was mingled with grief and yearning that Grampuzimun was not still there to stand between her and the world and all the troubles that came to her later in life, as he must have done when she was young and he was living. Undoubtedly, he was a most loving, helpful, generous, understanding and kindly man."
