[2322] Margaret Playters' ancestral church, St. Margaret, features a fifteenth century glass in the east window, one panel showing Sir William Playters, a Yorkist, in complete armor with his seven sons. Her father, William's effigy was stolen in 1843. The brass kneeling effigy of his second wife remains. The inscription on the tomb reads: "Here lieth buried the bodie of William Playters esquier, sonne and heire of Thomas and Ann his wife, who married Ann [sic. Jane], daughter to Sir Edmond Jenny of Knotshall, Knight, by whom he had issue. . ." His first wife, and Margaret's mother, is buried at St. Mary, Henstead, County Suffolk, about five miles southeast of Beccles. There are a number of other brasses and monuments dedicated to various Playters.

[2308] The descendants of William Clopton and Margery Waldegrave are eligible to belong to The Descendants of the Knights of the Garter. King Edward III founded the Knights of the Garter in 1348 as a noble fraternity consisting of the King, the Prince of Wales and 24 Knights Companion. This group was chosen for their chivalry and their valor at the Battle of Cre'cy in France two years earlier.

The Society of the Friends of St. George's and Descendants of the Knights of the Garter was established in 1931 and exists to help in preserving St. George's Chapel and in providing the necessary furnishings and equipment for this historic but living church, which is the shrine on the Order of the Garter. It is the burial place of many British sovereigns. On June 19, 1999, Edward Windsor, Earl of Wessex, and son of Queen Elizabeth, II., married Sophie Rhys-Jones, now the Countess of Wessex at St. George's Chapel.

[9828] OBITUARY: Another pioneer has gone, Jeremiah Phelps passed away at his residence three miles north-west of this village at 2 o'clock last tuesday morning from an attack of heart trouble to which he has or some time past been subject. He had been in usual health up to within tow hours of the time of his death. Mr. Phelps would have been 72 years of age in march next, and has been a resident of sparta thirty-eight years. Born in Canada, he removed to Wisconsin at the age of twenty-one years. Two years later he went to California where he spent seven years. Returning to Wisconsin in 1857 he was married to Armeia Spagenburg; and in 1865 they moved to this place, settling on the farm where he died. He became a member of the M. E. Church in 1868 and has maitained an earnest and concientious christian life - a man against whose life and character no word could ever be spoken. A widow and four children survive him, and he also heaves four brothers and four sisters, living in various parts of the west.

[9829] OBITUARY: Mrs. Armenia Phelps died at her home near this village Saturday afternoon from hear failure, and the funeral was held from the M. E. Church monday afternoon, Rev. L. W. Calkins officiating, assisted by Rev. Howard. Mrs. Phelps was born in Pennsylvania in 1822. She move to Ohio in 1826, and to Wisconsin in 1844. She was married to Jeremiah Phelps in 1857 and they came to Michigan in 1865, settling on the place where they ended their days. Deceased was Christian woman, and leaves behind many sincere friends to mourn her loss.
