BIOGRAPHY: Not for the first time in the former century and a half the heir to throne was of tender years. Perhaps what is more striking is that James was King of Scotland at the age of just seventeen months. A Governor was required to rule, nominally in the interest of the infant king. This Governor was John Duke of Albany, a grandson of James II of Scotland.
This governorship led to a bitter dispute as Albany was a staunch Francophile and even spoke French as his first language. This leaning he had towards France was directly opposed by those who preferred the friendship of England. In the end Albany was dismissed as Governor due to him spending more time in France than in Scotland.
James now came to power fully. At the age of 14 he ordered the suppression of the warring clans and the destruction of the border raiders. Later he fell out with King Henry VIII of England over his apparent leaning towards France. Once more war broke out with the Scots being humiliated at the Battle of Solway Moss.
With no surviving (legitimate) children and close to death he was told of the birth of perhaps the most famous Stewart of all, his daughter Mary Stewart.
James had married in Paris in 1537. His bride on this occasion was Princess Madeleine de Valois of France. The marriage was short-lived as Madeleine died just 6 months later. His second marriage, to Marie de Guise Lorraine, brought him three children. Unfortunately both James and Arthur died in infancy. He was survived by Mary however.

[4755] DEATH: Irving "Mike" Phelps
DEATH: It was to grandmother's house -- Rose Hill -- that Irving P. (Mike) Phelps came as a boy on visits to Aiken.
DEATH: He was the son of William Walter Phelps, Jr. and Nina Paris Phelps, and his grandparents, the Sheffield Phelpses, became prominent members of Aiken's Winter Colony at the last turn of the century. He was a nephew of the late Miss Claudia Phelps, the last member of the family to occupy Rose Hill.
DEATH: The first William Walter Phelps, whose father organized the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, served in Congress and was appointed minister first to Vienna and later to Berlin.
DEATH: Mike Phelps' parents in later years acquired the handsome Dutch colonial home on South Boundary at York Street, and they were regular winter visitors.
DEATH: Mike himself attended Buckley School, Fountain Valley School in Colorado and the University of Virginia. He served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier/navigator on B-26s during World War II.
DEATH: His working career was spent in the newsprint industry, and he was a top salesman for the Mead Corp., the Great Northern Paper Co. and Kruger Paper and Pulp. About 10 years ago he and his wife, Patricia, acquired a home on Sumter Street, while still maintaining a home at Beverly, Mass. He continued in his work as his health permitted.
DEATH: Mr. Phelps died at his home here Easter Sunday at age 75. His funeral at All Saints Anglican Church was attended by an overflow crowd, including most of the Winter Colony who were in town.
DEATH: Richard D. Sears III had known Mr. Phelps for some 40 years, since he and his wife were members with the Phelpses of the Myopia Hunt Club at Southhamilton, Mass.
DEATH: "He worked with newspaper people to whom he sold newsprint, and he had a great many friends," Mr. Sears said. "He was a wonderful salesman, a fine raconteur with a rich collection of stories and jokes. He was the life of the party."
DEATH: Since becoming a resident of Aiken, Mr. Phelps had acquired many more friends, and he will be greatly missed here. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family.
DEATH: Aiken Standard, April (5?), 2000

[12123]
Family Bible Records says he died 1828 in Cuba, and was buried at sea. Other records say he died at sea and was buried in Cuba. Notes from Charles say he sailed from Baltimore MD, 24 Feb 1821. Lived in Washington D. C. William Taylor Sanford was a sea Captain who made his home inWashington D. C. He died of yellow fever and was buried in Cuba.Written notes from Lois Norman states death in Cuba 1828.
The old seaman's log dated 1821 in the family belonged to him.
[12125] DAR Bible Records says died 1905 at Denver, Colo. A member of the Episcopalian church in Griggsville. Also bought a hotel in Havana, Illinois, about 1870 about one hundred miles from Griggsville. The box-shaped brick Taylor House was one of the oldest hotels in the state. Lincoln had slept there many times.
Note: There is a George Hamilton Sanford as head of household in 1840 Census of Carroll County, Georgia (probably not this George Sanford as he would have been 16 at the time) From Lois Norman's notes George H. Sanford went to sea with Capt. John Lowery Sanford in 1830.

[13452] Fanny Kniel was a daughter of Jason Bush, Miranda Phelps's other husband.
[13615] Died of insanity per film 0185476
Was injured early on in his tour with in the Civil War. Was hospitalized with "miasmatic disease" which was an infection from unsanitary battlefield conditions. He was treated with mercuric medications which cause chronic diaharia and ultimately insanity. This was very common during and after the Civil War. The hazzards of mercury-containing substances was not known until much later.
He was buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Westfield, MA in the Hoadley lot, Lot 23, Tier 6, Section 2-1. Thomas had an older sister, Mary Ann, who married Charles Henry Hoadley. Evidently, the Hoadleys offered their lot as an alternative to a pauper's burial.
