[10648] ~Searched NEF, no hits. Seached Pres & F&P no hits.
He become implicated with Robert Emmuel and others in the miscarrying of the Irish Rebellion. As a political exile he took refuge in the United States and landed in Philadelphia.
[10749] Moved to Jacksonville, IL 1851 & Springfield, IL 1856. Between 1843 and 1851, he was United States Congressman, 2nd District IL, (D).
Estate worth $55,000 in 1860.
John Alexander McClernand's childhood was spent in Shawneetown, Illinois. In the 1840's, he moved to Jacksonville, Illinois and finally to Springfield, Illinois where he lived for almost fifty years and where he subsequently died in 1900. Biographer, Stan Buckles, describes McClernand's physical appearance, "In stature John A. McClernand was a little above medium height and rather spare built, but was of a tough and wiry fiber. As a man he was not devoid of vanity, and he had an excitable temper, yet was placable and did not cherish animosity (Past &Present of Sangamon County)."
McClernand was a lawyer, soldier and statesman his entire life. In 1832 he was admitted to the Bar and volunteered in the Black Hawk War against Fox & Sac Indians. He served as a Democrat in the Illinois State Legislature from 1836-1842. After his tenure in the State Legislature, McClernand was elected to six terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1843-1851 and back again 1859-1861. During his tenure McClernand served as Chairman of Public Lands and Foreign Affairs. In 1861, he resigned to accept a commission of brigadier general by President Lincoln and was promoted to major General 1862. General McClernand was a principle player in the battles of Belmont, Fort Donelson, Fort Henry, Shiloh, The Vicksburg Campaign, and The Red River Expedition.
The highlight of McClernand's military career must be considered the Vicksburg Expedition. He single-handedly raised the bulk of the troops for the Expedition and was supposed to be the campaign's commanding general. Unfortunately, backroom dealing by West Point Regulars deprived John McClernand of the opportunity to command the entire expedition. Under the direction of General Grant, McClernand was regulated to subordinate command of the XIII Corps. Grant and other professional soldiers were extremely jealous of McClernand's natural fighting abilities and influential access to President Lincoln.
In the end, General Grant relieved McClernand for an oversight and technicality in which McClernand failed to forward a press release on to Grant for his approval. After several months, McClernand was restored to the command of the XIII corps, which was engaged in Nathaniel Banks' Red River Expedition. Although the Red River Campaign was far away from General Grant who was closing in on Robert E. Lee in the Eastern Theater, McClernand was unable to recapture his prominence. This time, McClernand's rising star was shot down by a near-fatal attack of malaria, and on November 30, 1864, his resignation was accepted by the War Department.
Once back in Springfield, McClernand was slowly able to recover from his health problems and rebuild his law practice. However, McClernand was not able to recover his political career. For the next eighteen years and five presidential administrations, the White House was controlled by the Republicans. As a loyal democrat, John McClernand's own dreams of becoming President were over. This is not to say that McClernand did not retain some amount of influence. McClernand served as a delegate to the 1868 Democratic National Convention held in Philadelphia. In 1870, he was elected Circuit Court Judge for the Sangamon District, and held the post until 1873. In 1876, McClernand went back the Democratic National Convention, but this time as its Chairman. McClernand finished his political career by serving on President Grover Cleveland's Utah Commission. It was John McClernand who spearheaded the negotiations with the Mormons, which ended polygamy and brought Utah into the Union. President Cleveland saw McClernand for what he was, the elder statesmen of his party. Cleveland never hesitated in corresponding with the old General and former Congressman about issues of the day. Until the very end, McClernand was a welcome guest on the lecture circuit and traveled all over the country giving speeches. McClernand loved nothing more than to speak out against, or as the General put it "agitate," the causes and issues that he did not believe in.
What should be considered John McClernand's greatest legacy was his commitment to public education. As a member of the State Legislature and the United States Congress, McClernand repeatedly stood up for public education. Whether it was voting for or crafting bills, John McClernand was at the forefront in bringing education to the common people. McClernand even donated his own home to the education cause, bringing about the first public school to be opened in Springfield. The original building has been long since been destroyed, but a re-built grade school is still in operation on the original site. McClernand Grade School is currently a national historic landmark and a living monument to the man who donated the land and his life to the public. John Alexander McClernand was one of Illinois' most colorful and heroic men and should be remember by his country as one of its proudest patriots. Hopefully, one day he will have his proper place in history.
