Alfred Aaron Phelps was born on 14 Feb 1849 in Wataga, Knox, Illinois. He grew up in Wataga and Peoria, Illinois. He married Addie Mary Cable, daughter of Ezra Cable and Martha Latimer in Berwick, Illinois, on 15 Jan 1879. Addie was born in Berwick, Illinois. Alfred and Addie had six children:

  • Sarah Latimer Phelps
  • Bertha J. Phelps
  • Salina L. Phelps
  • Richard E. Phelps

Alfred acquired the nickname "Squire" as he served as a justice of the peace. He was also a notary and real estate agent. He lived in Peoria, Illinois most of his life, and he rode in the Buffalo Bill's Wild West show for several years. He was a founder of the town of Averyville in 1890, along with his first cousin, Robert Avery (son of George M. Avery and Seraphina Princess Mary Phelps). Robert opened his plow-manufacturing company just north of the city of Peoria to save taxes.

Aaron and five others were the first board when the the Averyville Methodist Episcopal Church was organized on August, 1893, led by Rev. T. W. McVety.

Averyville was annexed by Peoria in 1928.
